Premier Venues.
A Brief History
The manor house of Gleniffer Brae was constructed in 1938-39 to
serve as a home for Mr Arthur Sidney Hoskins, his wife and family.
A S Hoskins established the Australian Iron and Steel Company at
Port Kembla in 1928. The company merged with BHP in 1938, thus becoming
the industrial centre of the Illawarra. The manor house was constructed
in the English Tudor style, and exhibits premium quality materials
and craftsmanship in the interior and exterior timberwork, stained
glass, stonework and brickwork.
The building was designed by Mrs Hoskins’ brother, architect
Geoffrey D Loverige, whilst the gardens and grounds were designed
by noted landscape designer Paul Sorenson. The name Gleniffer Brae
was adopted from a small village in Paisley, Scotland, the birthplace
of Mrs Hoskins’ grandfather.
In 1978, Wollongong City Council purchased the manor house and grounds,
merging it with the Wollongong Botanic Garden.
Since 1980, a section of the property has been leased to the Wollongong
Conservatorium of Music to conduct music education.
The suite of tastefully decorated rooms are available for hire,
and provide an ideal setting for both private and business functions.
Along with the scenic location and impressive manor house structure,
facilities include a fully equipped kitchen with dining, meeting,
lounge and bridal room catering for up to 80 people. Larger numbers
can be accommodated within the courtyard and grounds.
On-site car parking is also available.
